Ralph Lauren was born Ralph Lifshitz, on Oct. 14, 1939, in the Bronx, New York. His parents had immigrated from Belarus. His father was a house painter. In school, he sold ties to other students. He changed his last name to Lauren when he was 16. He dropped out of college. He started a small necktie business in the ’60s. By 1970, he had lines of men’s and women’s wear. He won the COTY Award for his men’s wear collection in 1970. In 1972, he launched the now-iconic Polo shirt. He made the clothes for the movie The Great Gatsby and for Diane Keaten’s character in Annie Hall (also iconic). In 1997, the Ralph Lauren Corp. went public, and, as of 2010, was making over $5 billion a year.
